Work Structuring Principles
- Work should be organized around
the Basic Transformations in the process to form Whole Tasks.
- The basic organizational unit
should be the Primary Workgroup (of four to twenty people).
- Each workgroup should have a
designated leader.
- Each workgroup should, as far as
possible, plan and organize its own work.
- Each workgroup should be able
fully to evaluate its performance against agreed standards of
excellence.
- Jobs should be designed so that
workgroup members can personally plan, do and evaluate at least one
Transformation in the process.
- Personal and structural
conditions to encourage team working throughout the organization should
be established.

"Is your organization structured to deliver results in
the most effective way?"
There seem to be as many methods for approaching
organizational designs
there are companies. The information on the subject can be overwhelming
and complex.
Without doubt the wrong structure can cripple a business.
Are you tired of consultant double speak?
When I was a Production Director in an agrochemicals plant I
remember we had consultants coming in and baffling us all with how much
knowledge they had. But once they left they took the knowledge with
them.
I knew there had to be a better way.
- You know your business better than anyone.
- I can give you the skills to assess your structure.
- I am plain speaking and objective
- You then have the information to decide if anything
needs to be done.
One if the most practical approaches I have used is Work Structuring.
Work Structuring is a practical, proven and unique approach which
enables managers and staff to discover for themselves the best
solutions for organizational structure, leadership and job design.
By taking its lead from the central every-day processes that
define an organization’s reason for being, Work Structuring adapts
readily to different sectors and allows managers to see their own
processes in a new light, overcoming departmental hurdles and
revealing, for example, how they can:
- Match empowerment with
accountability
- Enhance customer service
- Continuously raise efficiency
- Maximize morale
- Match manning levels with activity
These benefits stem from the fact that Work Structuring is a "whole
systems" and holistic approach to organizational redesign. As such it
differs fundamentally from "component-level" interventions which seek
to make improvements by tackling one or other components of an
organization in isolation from the rest.
Work Structuring uses an integrated range of tools and
concepts, originated by Christian Schumacher, which have over the last
25 years been adopted worldwide by organizations as diverse as major
manufacturers, health trusts, banks, government departments and even a
zoo
The application of this toolkit ensures that decisions are
clear, data-driven and wholly aligned to the WSL Seven Principles
around which this process is built.
Work Structuring Limited was established by Christian
Schumacher in 1986
